"Find your passion!" is common advice in American culture, but is it sound? The idea of "finding" a passion suggests it already exists and simply needs to be discovered. However, science shows that passions are developed. They often start with curiosity, and through repeated engagement, positive experiences, and accumulated knowledge, people begin to value and internalize (内化) an activity, turning what was once merely interesting into a passion.
Misunderstanding this process can limit progress. Our research highlights the importance of adopting a more accurate view of how interests develop. We use the framework of "fixed" and "growth" mindsets (思维模式) to explain this concept. A fixed mindset sees intellectual abilities and passions as natural and unchangeable, while a growth mindset believes that skills and passions can be developed over time.
A growth mindset has many advantages. For example, those with a fixed mindset may avoid exploring new areas. In our studies, arts students with a fixed mindset were less interested in scientific topics compared to those with a growth mindset, and vice versa for science students with a fixed mindset toward the arts. Fixed mindsets can also block creativity, as those with such mindsets are less likely to integrate diverse disciplines in problem-solving.
People with a fixed mindset often expect their passions to emerge easily. In one study, we introduced participants to the science of black holes through an engaging video. When asked to read a more technical article on the subject, those with a fixed mindset grew frustrated and lost interest. In contrast, those with a growth mindset maintained their curiosity despite the difficulty.
Can a growth mindset be taught? Our research involving over 700 first-year liberal arts students suggests it can. Most students had strong interests in the arts but little in math or science. We divided them into two groups: one received an intervention focusing on cultivating interests, and the other took a study skills module. The intervention included writing exercises to help students think of interests as developed, not fixed. By the end of the year, those who received the intervention were more interested in math and science and earned better grades in those subjects than their peers.
This study suggests that schools can help students develop a growth mindset of interest. However, individuals can also foster this mindset independently. Realizing that passions aren't found but cultivated can lead to greater curiosity and resilience. The saying, "Find something you love to do, and you'll never work a day in your life." should be updated: Working at loving what you do can make you more creative and fulfilled.
