椰树如何成为民族文化的竞技舞台
While soccer and table tennis are exciting, have you ever heard of climbing coconut trees? In November 2024, Hainan hosted the 12th National Traditional Games of Ethnic Minorities(少数民族). Coconut tree climbing is a big event in it.
In Hainan, coconut trees are everywhere. For a long time, Hainan people have climbed these trees to pick coconuts. Now, it’s a fun sport! Athletes climb 7-metre or 9-metre coconut trees. They can use any method they prefer, with the goal of reaching the top and touching the bell. The fastest climber wins. This year, the winner in the men’s group climbed a 9-metre tree in just 6.188 seconds!

There are also other fun games like single bamboo drifting, swing and horse riding. They come from different ethnic groups or regions. They show different histories, cultures and people’s lives. About 7,000 athletes from all over China joined the games.
