糖葫芦:传承八百余年的酸甜美味
Tanghulu is a traditional snack from Northern China. People of all ages love it, especially kids. It is usually made of haws, which are full of vitamin C. Over 800 years ago, one of the emperor’s wives was sick and had a poor appetite. The doctor told her to eat 10 boiled haws with sugar before dinner. She felt better after two weeks. People heard about it and started making it too. They put haws on sticks, dipped them in hot sugary syrup, and dried. The syrup made a hard and sweet shell around haws, like wearing a sugar jacket. They taste both sweet and sour at the same time.

Now people use many other fruits to make tanghulu, such as cherry tomatoes, oranges, strawberries, blueberries, kiwis, bananas, or grapes. To make tangluhu at home is super easy, and takes less than 20 minutes. Whether you’re looking for a quick snack for yourself or treating friends, tanghulu is a good choice. Here are the steps:
a) Thread each fruit onto a bamboo stick. You can use the whole fruit or cut it into small pieces.
b) Make the syrup. Cook the sugar with water until it turns into large bubbles.
c) Carefully dip the fruit into the hot syrup, and then quickly put it into the ice water. This will help harden the syrup.
Why not have a try at home?
