When we eat eggs, we usually throw away eggshells. But in a new study, a group of USA scientists from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell used eggshells to help damaged bones to get better.
The scientists first crushed eggshells and mixed them with other things. They then put the glue - like mix into a 3D printer to make small molds(模具). The molds looked like small pieces of beehives(蜂窝).
When they put cells of a person’s bones on these molds, to the scientists’ surprise, the cells grew very quickly. This is because there are many minerals in eggshells, such as calcium. The scientists said that these minerals could provide “food” for the cells. This allows bones to grow faster and become stronger.
If someone loses a bone, doctors can put the “eggshell bones” into the person’s body. Because they can grow from the person’s cells, and they will work better.
The scientists already tested the “eggshell bones” on mice. They worked fine. Also, thanks to 3D printing, scientists were able to create molds in different shapes. This makes it possible for our teeth to be repaired in the same way.
( )1. What can we infer about scientists from Paragraphs 2 & 3?
A. Scientists made molds by hand.
B. Scientists discovered eggshells are like glue.
C. Scientists grew cells on small molds.
D. Scientists put bones in eggshells.
( )2. The meaning of the underlined word “provide” is close to “________”.
A. choose B. give C. carry D. prepare
( )3. Why can eggshells help bones grow?
A. Because they can grow faster. B. Because they are very strong.
C. Because they are good for health. D. Because they have rich minerals.
( )4. What role does 3D printing play?
A. To help scientists use animal bones. B. To help scientists repair teeth quickly.
C. To make different shapes of molds. D. To make it possible to work on mice.
Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
[B] C B D C A
根据第三段中的“When they put cells of a person's bones on these molds, to the scientists' surprise, the cells grew very quickly.”
This is because there are many minerals in eggshells
根据最后一段中的“Also, thanks to 3D printing, scientists were able to create molds in different shapes.”
