B
Grandparents Day falls on the first Sunday after Labor Day. On that day people send their grandparents a card, choose a special gift for them, give them a call or visit them in person. But how did it come into being?
It was Marian McQuade, an American woman, who first came up with the idea. When trying to hold a celebration for the elderly members of her community in 1956, McQuade was disappointed to find out that many of them weren’t often visited by their families. So she decided to set a day to call on more people to show more love and respect to the elderly.
At the very beginning, McQuade just wanted to encourage people to show more love to the elderly. Her intention, however, didn’t stop card companies from getting excitement on the commercial value of this new vacation. They started promoting it and tried to sell their Grandparents Day cards. But what makes us delighted is that now many families have more meaningful ways of celebrating the vacation. Even if some grandparents live far away, the celebrations can be held with the help of the Internet and modern social media.
