When I was a young girl, my parents emphasised the importance of social skills, which I really appreciate. They taught me how to get along with others, and how to choose good friends.
Benefiting from their advice on a good many occasions, now I want to teach my kid the same skills.
Recently, my daughter was with a big group of lovely little girls and each one had a lot of fun. However, I found some of them had wrong attitudes and bad behaviours. For example, they said mean things and acted in a disrespectful way.
Thankfully, none of those was what my daughter did or took the lead. Since we both witnessed those behaviours, I considered it a perfect opportunity to discuss how to pick friends with her. Then we talked about how some girls didn't make good friends, even though they were fun to play with. She understood that their words or behaviours might hurt others and what bad effects they might bring about even though the hurtful words did not come from her own lips. On the whole, I tried to keep our talk to the point – what kind of person to befriend, but made it quickly and changed over to more light - hearted topics.
A few weeks later, an interesting thing happened. After school, my daughter talked about some girls' unacceptable behaviours she had noticed at school, showing her disapproval of it. And she is now developing friendships with some other girls who share her principles and views.
I have never told her that she has to end a friendship with anybody, because I believe in being nice to everyone. Instead, I advise her to look for good friends. Now she is able to get along well with anyone around.
