For example, mayday is an emergency (紧急情况) code word. It is used around the world in voice communications. You might see a war film in which an aeroplane has been hit by rocket fire. The pilot gets on his radio and calls “mayday, mayday, mayday” to tell that his plane is in danger of hitting the ground. But mayday has nothing to do with the month of May. It comes from the French expression “m’aider” or “m’aidez”, which means “to help me”. The mayday call signal was created in the 1920s. Today, the word “mayday” is used to mean a life-threatening emergency.
Many other French words are widely used in English as well. “Entrepreneur” is another French word in the business world. It means a person who starts and operates a new business and is responsible for risks involved. In the arts, many French words are used, too. For example, a film noir is a film about killings and other crimes. These films were popular in the 1940s and 1950s.
The French are famous for their food. So, it makes sense that many French cooking terms are used in English. All cooks need to know how to sauté, which means “to fry something quickly in a small amount of oil or butter”. When you are eating at a restaurant, the waiter or waitress may tell you “bon appetit”, which means “to enjoy your meal”.
