What Causes the Difference?
Two months ago, I went to America as an exchange student and lived with my host family for a couple of days. I found that Americans say thanks much more than we do. And they even say thank you to their parents, which we do not usually do in our country.
On the first day, they welcomed me with a big dinner. I was surprised to find when the dishes were served by the hostess, the host looked at her sincerely and said thank you to her and the hostess replied, "You are welcome." When the sister needed salt and the brother helped pass it to her, she also said thank you to him. After dinner, we went out for a walk. I found the father held the door for the others and the mother who was walking after him also said thanks. The children did the same thing. Those occasions were repeated every day while I was in their house. However, family members seldom say thank you to each other in my country. In my family, my father never says thank you to my mother, and neither does my mother. That also happens between my father and me, as well as my mother and me. When we do something for each other, we just think that we are family.
Sociologists say that different cultures cause this difference. People in my country take family members as a whole. They think they are close to each other and it's very normal to help each other. If they say thank you to a person with a close relationship, it would make them feel embarrassed and may even cause misunderstanding - they are not family or related to each other. Just the opposite, Americans would like to regard themselves as independent ones so they think they should respect the person who provides them with help or support.
Knowing cultural difference helps me better understand both the people in my country and the American people. Do not judge which is good or not. What we should do is try to understand and accept it.
