Movies and television shows can influence English greatly. Today we’ll talk about an expression that comes from a movie.
If I say to you “just keep swimming”, I am repeating what a famous fish has said. In the movie *Finding Nemo*, Dory is a friendly, helpful fish. She becomes friends with Marlin, a fish who has just lost his only son, Nemo. Dory offers to help Marlin find Nemo. Their journey is hard. Every time Marlin feels like giving up, Dory says to him, “Just keep swimming.” With these words, Dory is telling her friend that he should keep searching for his son instead of giving up. We all face difficulties. And we may want to give up. But when a friend says “just keep swimming”, it gives us the hope to reach our goal. The expression comes from a children’s movie, but the meaning is not childish.
Another expression, “to keep your head above water”, expresses a similar message. Take action to survive, even if you don’t feel that way. However, would I say “just keep swimming” in a very serious situation or to a very serious co - worker who I don’t know well? Probably not. But we do have other words of encouragement. You can say “Hang in there!”, “You can do it!” or “Don’t give up!”.
When we use expressions from movies or television shows, it is a way of creating a feeling of closeness with others.
