A recent discovery made by Dr David Vaughan is saving Florida’s endangered coral reefs (礁). Amazingly, this was a discovery made by accident which causes rock coral to grow much faster than it does normally.
Coral is an amazing creature that can live for hundreds of years. Unfortunately, a quarter or more of Earth’s coral has disappeared in recent years. This is devastating (毁灭性的) for both Earth and humans because coral reefs produce large amount of oxygen for the planet, and of course, humans and animals need oxygen to live. In addition, coral reefs are home to many kinds of fish which are important food for humans. Until now, there has been no major development in ways to save the coral reefs.
Dr Vaughan got the idea of breaking coral while he was moving it in his lab. When he tried to pick up a piece of coral, it broke into pieces. Knowing how sensitive (敏感的) coral is, he thought he had killed it. However, a week later he looked at the broken pieces and saw that they had doubled in size! Amazed, he tried breaking more coral and those pieces grew back extremely quickly, too. He called this his “eureka mistake”.
Since discovering this method of growing coral, Dr Vaughan and his team have produced thousands of coral fragments in the lab. Now they are testing to find coral which can survive under warmer temperatures and resist (抵抗) disease.
