Traditional Chinese medicine, also known as herbal medicine, is one of the great discoveries of Ancient China. The use of natural herbs, the benefits ¹of which are to bring better health to people, is becoming more and more popular all over the world.
The father of herbal medicine is known as Shennong. His name means “the Holy Farmer”, ²from whom the Chinese people were said to learn farming as well as the use of herbs for medicine. Shennong is respected today by the Chinese people, ³for whom he is an important figure in ancient times.
During the Ming Dynasty, an important book about medicines called *Bencao Gangmu* was written by Li Shizhen, ⁴in which, for the first time, a complete description of the medical uses of herbs was written down. This book systematically listed abundant plants and animals that were thought to have positive effects on humans. The work is still used today by doctors who practise traditional Chinese medicine.
Herbal medicine works on the principle that to make people who are sick better, you need to bring their bodies back into harmony. This is because illness is the result of disharmony. The use of herbs is the means ⁵by which the body may recover harmony and people become well.
