第一节(共 15 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 30 分)
阅读短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C、D 四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
On February 8, volunteers from HESS Construction (建筑) and Engineering Services went to Ridgeview Middle School in Gaithersburg, Maryland for one-day volunteer experience. Throughout the day, they taught six career readiness and financial literacy (金融知识) lessons to a group of sixth grade students.
Mike began teaching his first lesson of the day together with his colleague George. In class, George took notice of a student who seemed to be lost. As it turned out, he was an ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) student who knew almost no English. Mike and George turned to the teacher in the classroom for help but she couldn't give any help. Therefore, George knelt down and began translating everything Mike was teaching. “Spanish is actually my first language,” said George. “I was an ESOL student myself and I know how frustrating it can be to feel as though you have been left to look after yourself while the rest of the class goes on. So I know first-hand how great it is when someone actually takes the time to help you out.” When George started speaking to the boy in Spanish, his eyes lit up like he was saying “Oh, I understand.”
The whole day, George sat beside the boy and acted as a translator whenever he needed him. There was a lesson called “World at Work” where the students found out what they were good at and what jobs they would enjoy taking in the future. After George explained his own career in construction to the boy as an example, the boy chose the “Architecture and Construction” category. George said he would be back again to be a volunteer. “I love working with kids, so naturally I had a great time.”
