B
Over the past decades, each generation has made themselves different from the others, and some generations were even given certain “names”. What if you were born around 1996 or later?
This generation is called iGeneration (hereafter referred to as iGen), because these teens and young adults have been growing up with the rise of the Internet and smartphones. A recent survey found that two out of three US teens owned a smartphone, which has affected nearly every aspect of their lives.
According to the research, moderate (适度的) use of smartphones and social media is up to an hour a day. Therefore, some parents might worry about their kids because they spend so much time on their phones. It seems so different from how these parents passed their time as young adults. But spending this much time on screens is not just different – in many ways, it’s actually worse.
Spending less time with friends means less time to develop social skills. A study on sixth graders has some interesting findings: if the students spent just five days at a camp without using screens, they did a better job at reading emotions on others’ faces.
In addition, iGen reads books, magazines and newspapers much less than previous generations did as teens. Perhaps as a result, average SAT critical reading scores have dropped 14 points since 2005. Some college teachers tell me that students have more trouble reading longer text passages and seldom read the required textbook.
This isn’t to say that iGen is good for nothing. They are physically safer and more tolerant than previous generations were. They also seem to be more devoted to work and have more realistic expectations.
Somewhat to our surprise, iGen said they would rather see their friends in person than communicate with them using their phones. Parents used to worry about their kids spending too much time with their friends – they were a bad influence, a waste of time. But it might be just what iGen needs nowadays.
6. What are people called if they were born around 1996 or later? (no more than 5 words)
7. What is the proper time limit for teens to use smartphones and social media a day according to the research? (no more than 10 words)
8. Why does the author use the example of the study in paragraph 4? (no more than 10 words)
9. What are the shortcomings (缺点) of people born around 1996 or later? (no more than 20 words)
10. What is the passage mainly about? (no more than 10 words)
