1. The Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, better known more simply as Kew Gardens, is one of the most famous gardens for the study and enjoyment of plants in the world. The word “botanic” means relating to plants.
2. Kew Gardens was at first a private summer palace for the royal family to relax. The gardens were created in 1759 to provide a quiet place to get away from the noise and crowds of the city.
3. Kew Gardens became a popular place to visit after it opened to the public in 1840. The famous Palm House was constructed in 1844 and the Temperate House, the largest Victorian glasshouse in the world, followed later in the 19th century. With the opening of the railway line in 1869, Kew became an easy day out for people living in the capital. Today, millions of people go to Kew Gardens to enjoy its pleasant atmosphere, walking under the cooling branches of the trees and refreshing themselves by experiencing the calming greenery.
4. As well as nature, Kew Gardens includes a number of interesting buildings. These include the Great Pagoda which was built in 1762 as a copy of a Chinese building. This was at a time when all things from Asia were very fashionable in England. The pagoda has 10 floors and stands at almost 50 metres high. You can climb the 253 steps to the top to get a breathtaking view across this part of London.
5. But Kew Gardens is more than just a beautiful park pleasing to people with green fingers. It is actually a place of very important scientific research. Kew has taken the lead in collecting and conserving plant seeds from all over the world. It is starting with the most at-risk plants and those with the most use for the future.
6. In 2003 Kew Gardens became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in recognition of its importance as a special place for the study of and enjoyment of plants.
