<题目>B
In 1992 workers were building a highway in southern California when they discovered the bones of a mastodon (an elephant - like animal). Archaeologists (考古学家) started to examine the site and they found sharply broken rocks with the bones. The rocks looked like a human might have used them as hammers to break the bones to make bone tools. The bones were found in two piles, which was not the way the bones would be laid out if the animal died naturally on the spot.
At the time the site was discovered, there wasn’t a good way to date the bones. However, finally scientists were able to date them using new technology. What they found was shocking – the bones are around 130,000 years old. Most scientists agree that humans first came to the Americas across the Bering Strait between 13,000 and 15,000 years ago. The date of the mastodon bones would mean that humans arrived in the Americas almost ten times earlier than that.
Of course, some archaeologists think that humans may not have broken the mastodon bones. It is possible that the bones were broken by nature – in a landslide. Also, critics want the bones to be dated using other technology to confirm the 130,000 date.
Although there is no clear answer yet, if this is the evidence of humans from 130,000 years ago, it will change everything we thought we knew about humans arriving in the Americas.
