In public schools of New York City, many different languages are spoken among more than one million students. For these students, English is not their first language. New York City’s Department of Education is helping them by providing dual-language programs. Students are taught in two languages, English and another one, like Russian or Chinese.
Milady Baez, deputy chancellor of English Language Learners and Student Support, says these dual-language programs will help students succeed in the future. “The jobs of the future require that our students know more than one language. They are going to be traveling abroad and communicating with people from all over the world. This will open doors for them.”
Middle school students might not have thought much about their future jobs yet. For Jiang Keqing, she likes keeping up her first language, Mandarin (普通话). “It makes me feel that I am home because I can speak in Chinese and learn in Chinese. So it makes me feel better and makes me understand more about what I’m learning.”
When Anastasia Hudikova came to the United States, she was two years old. She says the Russian-English program helps her bear her culture and her language in mind.
