B
If you’re looking for somewhere unique to travel to in the autumn and see some fallen leaves, consider visiting Japan’s Mount Koya (Koyasan) in Wakayama Prefecture. Koyasan, as it’s known in Japanese, is home to 117 sacred (神圣的) temples. Among them you’ll find the 1,200-year-old temples and halls.
Visitors to Koyasan can spend the night at a temple. Guests are served with a traditional Buddhist dinner called shojin-ryori in beautiful red and black lacquer ware (漆器) dishes. After dinner, you can put on the cotton robe provided for you and enjoy the gardens, or relax in the baths before bed. The rooms have the paper doors and tatami mat floors typical of traditional Japanese buildings, often with a garden view.
In the centre of the temples is a cemetery (墓地) which contains the graves of many Japanese people, including important historical figures. With its more than 200,000 graves, this is the largest cemetery in Japan, and the number of graves grows every year. As you walk along the path you’ll find a deep well, and one of the legends says that if you can see your face clearly in the water you will live a long life. Some of the monks at the temples speak English, and English-speaking guides are available for tours of the cemetery, so you can even practise your English on your trip.

With growing populations and shrinking water supplies, it’s necessary to use less water, and use it for more than one purpose. Melissa McDonald is a designer with Santa Fe Permaculture and an expert on water recycling. 1 ______.
“Gray water is bathing water, dish water, laundry water, and things like that,” McDonald says. “Basically black water is anything that has sewage (污物). That’s really important for people to understand.” 2 ______. Let that stuff go where it needs to.
3 ______. “The simplest system would be to just convert your washing machine to pump through a tube out into the garden,” McDonald says. “That’s very inexpensive – you can probably do that for between $20 and $40. 4 ______.”
Be sure to keep an eye on the health of your plants. Gray water is very alkaline (碱性的), and most plants like acidic (酸性的) soil. 5 ______. And always let the gray water run into the soil – don’t sprinkle it onto plants.
