Marie Curie, whose birth name was Maria Sklodowska, was born in Poland on November 7, 1867. Her father was a physics teacher in a high school and encouraged her interest in science. In 1891 she went to study in Paris and changed her name to the French, Marie. Two years later she passed the examination for a degree in physics with the highest grades in her class. She later married the French physicist Pierre Curie.
Their marriage marked the start of a partnership that was soon to achieve results of world significance, in particular the discovery of polonium (so called by Marie in honour of her native land) in the summer of 1898 and that of radium a few months later.
