二、阅读理解。A
It's difficult to find a piece of clothing as widely worn, accepted, and loved all over the world as jeans. Do you know the history of them? Today, let's take a close look at their history.
A young man called Levi Strauss went from Germany to New York City in 1851. In 1853, he left New York City for San Francisco, planning to open a branch (分店) of his brother's dry goods business there.
At first, Strauss planned to sell canvas (帆布) to the local works to make tents. But when he learned that many miners there couldn't find a pair of pants strong enough to last, he had a new idea. Strauss had the canvas made into waist overalls (高腰工作裤). Very soon, he sold all the canvas trousers he had made! They were just what miners wanted. The miners liked the pants but complained that the material was heavy and made their skin uncomfortable. Strauss then used another material called denim (斜纹粗棉布). Denim was a bit lighter than canvas, but it was very strong. Strauss also decided to use colored denim to make his trousers; he chose dark blue. "Blue jeans" had arrived!
Although they were first designed as work pants, blue jeans became an important part of pop culture in the 1950s. Today, they are worn by people all over the world.
