Animals are our friends. We know that dogs can help blind people go to some places.
Now, horses can also do it. Digby is a small American horse, and it is the first guide(向导)
horse in England. Its owner is a blind man named Mohammed Patel. Mohammed is afraid of
dogs, so he chooses Digby as his guide.
Digby gets a lot of training(训练) with Mohammed. It learns to walk slowly and lead
Mohammed in the street. It also helps him get books and magazines, and even choose clothes
when they go shopping. Digby is very smart and careful, and it always stays close to
Mohammed to keep him safe.
However, Digby is not a small horse anymore. It is very big and about 80 cm tall. This
makes it difficult for Mohammed to take Digby to his office. When Digby goes to the office, it
often knocks(碰撞) things off the desks. So Mohammed has to say goodbye to Digby as his
guide at work. But luckily, Digby finds a new job. Now, it helps blind people travel around
some places in London. Many people are surprised to see a guide horse, but they think Digby
is amazing.
Guide horses like Digby have many advantages(优势). For example, a guide dog has only
eight years of working life, but a guide horse can live for about 50 years. This means a guide
horse can be a "lifelong friend" for people. Also, horses are very calm and not easily scared,
which makes them great guides.
