Shanghai's new pet: robot dogs
上海新宠物:机器狗
While it is common to see people walking their dogs on the streets of Shanghai, people are surprised to see a different kind of "dog" on the sidewalks-a robot dog.
In one short video on the Internet, a young woman is walking a silver robot dog in People's Square in Shanghai.
Named Go1, the robot was made by Chinese start-up Unitree in June 2021. According to Chen, a manager of Unitree, the robot costs about 16,000 yuan and it can run at a speed of 4.7 metres per second. It is only about 12 kilograms and you can take it wherever you go.
Although sometimes people think they are soulless machines and that they can never compare with real dogs who love their owners, there are still many advantages of robot dogs. Xiaomei, a college student with a robot dog, said, "They can calm me down and help me relax after a busy day's work. But they don't require any food, and I don't need to clean up after them, so I don't have to spend time with them if I am busy."
Wang Xingxing, the CEO of Unitree, first developed a robotic dog during his post-graduate(研究生) studies. He named it XDog. Later, he started his company in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province in 2016. So far, the company has made robotic dogs B1, AlienGo and Laikago, and the consumer-grade Go1, Al and BenBen.
AlienGo and Al are sold online for around 400,000 yuan and 100,000 yuan. The two models are mainly used for industrial purposes.
