Visiting the Great Wall
游览长城
The Great Wall is, without a doubt, one of China's must - see sights. All year round, tourists from near and far crowd Badaling (八达岭) and Mutianyu (慕田峪), its two best - known sections.
But there's much more to the Great Wall than these two hotspots. On our recent trip to China, we discovered two hidden sections—Jinshanling and Simatai. They are located about 150 kilometres northeast of Beijing. At least for now, they are almost free of tourists.
Like Badaling, Jinshanling was built during the Ming Dynasty. There are nearly 70 watchtowers (瞭望塔). Some are circular (圆形的), and some are square. Their roofs vary in style as well. When I was there, I found myself wondering about the poetic minds that named them centuries ago. Many towers bear names like Peach Spring or Fox Head.
It was exciting to enjoy the sights—the ancient stones and the nearby mountains—with no one else in sight. Most of Jinshanling is steep, with stone stairs going up and down.
About ten kilometres away, we visited Simatai. It also has many watchtowers with lovely names. One part of this section is called Ladder to Heaven. It's very steep, and we were out of breath when we finally reached the top. But it was worth the effort. The view was breathtaking. In the words of my husband, Paul, "It feels like walking in a Chinese scroll painting (卷轴画)."
Simatai wasn't as empty as Jinshanling, but it was far from crowded. We could still enjoy all the views at our own pace.
If you want to appreciate the greatness of the Great Wall without the crowds, Jinshanling or Simatai won't let you down.

3. D 根据第三段中的“When I was there, I found myself wondering about the poetic minds that named them centuries ago. Many towers bear names like Peach Spring or Fox Head.”和第五段中的“It also has many watchtowers with lovely names. One part of this section is called Ladder to Heaven.”
