China's first borehole over 10,000 metres
China dug a hole over 10,000 metres deep in Xinjiang.
In May 2023, China started 1 its first over 10,000-metre-deep borehole in Xinjiang. By 1 October, the hole was already 7,856 metres deep, reported Xinjiang Daily.
The borehole was drilled to a depth of 10,910 metres. It took about 630 days to 2, said Bloomberg News. It is the deepest hole ever dug in China. The drill need go 3 more than ten layers(层) of rock. The 4 layer is about 145 million years old.
The earth has lots of 5 inside. So as the drill goes deeper, it faces hotter and hotter temperatures. The metal drill could get so hot that it would become as 6 as noodles. A company doing the project, China National Petroleum Corp, 7 this problem by using heat-resistant(耐热的) drills.
According to Xinhua News, while testing drilling technologies, the hole will also give us useful information about the earth's internal structure(内部结构). The hole was dug in an area 8 oil. The oil could be used to heat buildings and make fuel(燃料) for cars and planes.
It's 9 to look deep into the earth because it could help find energy resources. It could also help scientists study the risks of 10 disasters, such as 11 and volcanic eruptions.
Could they drill all the way through? While some people joke about digging from China to Australia on 12 side of the world, we know this is not possible. The earth is made up 13 three main layers: the core(地核), the mantle(地幔) and the crust(地壳). The 14 is the outer layer or the "skin" of the planet. It is about 40 kilometres deep, meaning a 10-kilometre-deep hole will go through only 15 of the crust. How deep it is!

5. C 根据空格下文中的“So as the drill goes deeper, it faces hotter and hotter temperatures.”
be rich in 意为“富含……”,故选 B。
be made of 意为“由……
