An old man in Xinzhuang Town of Minhang District, Shanghai has spent about 20 years practicing eggshell painting, and his 38-year-old student is now giving the art a new meaning through the work.
Eggshell painting in Xinzhuang has been passed on and developed thanks to two generations of eggshell painting artists—Fei Yongquan and Jiang Lanjun. Eggshell painting can date back to a folk custom of colouring eggshells before cooking about 2,000 years ago with later changes such as the "God of Joy" eggs in wedding customs, the "Ding Ding" eggs sent to mothers and birthday eggs sent to the elderly.
