The Red Flag Canal
红旗渠
In Linzhou, Henan Province, there is a 70.6-kilometre-long canal on the side of the Taihang Mountains—the Red Flag Canal. It has solved the long-term problem of water shortage (短缺) and has changed the life of local people by bringing water to the area. Behind the Red Flag Canal, there are many moving stories that still inspire (激励) us today.
Before the canal was built, finding drinking water was a headache for the local people. They had to climb high mountains to get water and it was a very hard way. In order to solve the problem, they started to build the Red Flag Canal in the 1960s. At that time, they only had simple tools but they never gave up. With hard work, strong belief and selfless spirit, Chinese people showed a wonder to the world! About ten years later, the Red Flag Canal was completed!

The Red Flag Canal is also known as "the Great Wall of Water in China". Lots of people visit it every year. They can see some stone pictures of heroes on the mountain walls in the Red Flag Canal Museum. They come here to learn what the spirit of the Red Flag Canal is and how great Chinese people are. Many tourists have said the same words, "We should never forget the heroes' great work and spirit!"
