Rapid response saves a UK student
快速反应拯救了一名英国学生
On 12 August 2024, a 20-year-old student from the UK fell over while taking part in a summer exchange programme at a university in Suzhou. After falling, his breathing was weak and he lost consciousness(意识). Someone called 120 at once.
Yang Xiaoping, from Suzhou's emergency centre, received the call and quickly decided that the student needed CPR. Through an online first aid platform, Yang and another doctor taught someone who was on the scene to perform CPR on the student.
Once the ambulance arrived, the student was connected to an electronic CPR device on the way to the hospital. After arriving at the hospital, the emergency team continued CPR for about seven minutes until they detected the student's heartbeat and pulse(脉搏). Then he was sent to the intensive care unit(重症监护室). The student recovered rapidly for proper treatment he received there. In a few days, he could eat and get out of his bed by himself.
On 15 August, the student's parents flew to Suzhou to express their thanks. "We're so thankful to everyone—the warm-hearted people in the university, ambulance team, nurses, and especially Doctor Lu. We hope to bring our son home alive and well, which would have been impossible without everything they've done," his father said.
Doctor Lu is a member of the emergency team in the hospital. He said, "For a patient like the student, each step—from on-scene CPR to ambulance care to hospital's rescue—must be done perfectly. The online first aid platform played an important role in saving the student's life. It was launched in our hospital in July. So far, it has helped many people."
