As we know, American and British people both speak English. But sometimes it does not seem like the same language. In fact, there are some important differences 1 British English and American English.
First of all, there are many different words and expressions 2 (express) the same meaning. For example, British people always say “autumn, sweater”, but Americans never say like that, they say “fall” and “jumper”. In England, if you are going to telephone your friends, you “phone them up”. 3 America, you “give them a call”.
The second difference is the 4 (spell), such as “centre” and “center”, “metre” and “meter”. The British people use a lot of the 5 (France) spelling, such as “colour” instead of “color”. That's the main reason for it.
6 (three), they sound very different. Often, Americans don't say each word separately(分开地). They say several words together. Americans may say “I dunno” instead 7 “I don't know”. Or they may say “Whaddya say?” instead of “What did you say?” However, the British are 8 (much) careful in their speech. They usually say all the words and keep them separate.
There are a few differences in grammar, too. The British may say “Have you got...?” while Americans prefer “Do you have...?” Mostly British 9 (speaker) will drop the word “the” before something. For example, “He's in the hospital” would be 10 (say) in Britain “He's in hospital.”
