Everyone knows that English is spoken as the first language in the UK, the USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Among these countries, the Irish have made the greatest contributions to the English language in both its words and literature(文学).
English literature has become more colorful because of the writings of the Irish. Many great “English” writers were born and often raised in Ireland, though many moved to the UK at some point in their lives. George Bernard Shaw and Edmund Burke were among them.
George Bernard Shaw(1856 - 1950) was a giant(巨人) of English theater. Shaw was born in Dublin—the capital of Ireland, and moved to England with his family when he was 20 and stayed there for the rest of his long life. One of his best well - known plays is Pygmalion (1916). It was later filmed, winning an Oscar(奥斯卡奖) for Shaw. A good story never dies. Now Pygmalion has been made into a new movie named Pretty Woman (1990).
Though English literature written by the British is rich and colorful, it would be dimmer (暗淡的) without the Irish contributions.
