How are English - speaking kids taught to read? Sandy, a primary school teacher in the United States shares with us her teaching experience.
She teaches kids the alphabet and letter sounds. When teaching sounds of the letters, she only teaches the most common sounds first. For example, she would teach: A says /æ/, apple, apple, /æ//æ//æ/; E says /e/, egg, egg, /e//e//e/; I says /ɪ/, pig, pig, /ɪ//ɪ//ɪ/, etc. Even though those letters have other sounds, she tries not to mention them to confuse the students.
Once the students are good at what have been taught, she begins to teach students double long vowels (like bee, see) and magic e (as in make, bake).
After that she teaches sight words. Sight words are words that can't be sounded out because they are impossible to sound out. These are words like the, he, she, they, we, are.
Spelling lists are important. Every week, students get a new spelling list. Some of the words are “team”, “please”, “seem”, and “seed.” Students in primary school have spelling lists until the 5th grade.
Reading is a must, and all the students in each grade have to do some reading. For little kids, a book with pictures helps them understand what they read better. For example, when students read the sentence “John has a baby dinosaur”, the word “dinosaur” might be a hard word for them, but they may guess the word if the book has a picture of John holding a baby dinosaur. So, context is important.

Can you remember the day when you spoke your first word? If you can, you are unusual. Try to think of what the first few months of your life were like. I'm sure you just spent most of your time eating, sleeping and crying. As you grew older, you were awake(醒着的) more of the time. It took your parents more time to play with you and talk to you. You watched and listened. You began to know that people made some sounds to go with some things.
Then you began to cry to make sounds you heard. And step by step you were able to make the right sound for one thing.
On that day you came to understand the secret of the language. The secret is that a certain sound means a certain thing. One sound might be as good as another. But it is not as good as a word unless(除非) everyone agrees on its meaning. Only when a group of people use the same set of sounds of a thing can they understand each other, so these people have a language.
After you found the secret of language, you learned words. Some of the words mean things, such as books, chairs and shops. Some of the words mean actions, such as go and swim. And other words describe things like “I want to go out and play with my friend”. This is language. By the way of language people can communicate. So we say that languages mean communication.

What is body language? Charles Lebeau, a professor of public speaking, says that body language includes posture(姿势), eye contact (接触) and gestures(手势). He has written some books about how to do it well.
“When speaking in public, many presenters (主持人) will have problems with posture, eye contact and gestures. I think it is because they're nervous. They are nervous not only because they are doing a presentation, but because they don't feel confident. So they may have all kinds of difficulty speaking in public, and also in controlling their body.”
Charles Lebeau says the best way to avoid this problem is to use pictures and few words for notes instead of sentences. The picture should help communicate the point you want to make. Then you can look at the audience(听众) while speaking.
Holding on to notes makes it difficult for a speaker to gesture naturally. Mr. Lebeau says gestures should support the point the speaker is making. For example, when talking about three ideas, hold up three fingers to introduce them. Then hold up one finger while explaining the first idea, two fingers for the second, and so on.
An important part of public speaking is practice. When you practice, remember these important tips: know your posture, eye contact and gestures. Record yourself by using a phone or camera. Watch yourself and plan what you will do to improve. Look for chances to speak and get more confidence.
