Xu Xiake was an outstanding(杰出的) traveler and geographer in Ming Dynasty. He was born in Jiangyin, the east of Jiangsu Province. He liked reading books, especially the history books about different places instead of some classic books when he was very young.
Some years later, some of his classmates became officials after passing the Imperial Examination(科举考试), but he never took part in the examination. Once he told his mother that he didn’t want to be an official like others, but a traveler who decided to travel around the country. Xu Xiake was very surprised when his mother encouraged him, “An aspiring man should travel around the country. It’s very good for you to travel, because you can enjoy the beauty of the nature, read some amazing books, and meet many wise men when you are traveling. I support you.”
He started his traveling with the hat that his mother made by hand at the age of 21. In order to get the real and detailed geography information, he overcame (克服) different kinds of difficulties. Sometimes he climbed over mountains and hills like a monkey, and sometimes he traveled in some places where he couldn’t find places to rest. He always slept outside even in cold winter nights.
Xu Xiake left his foot prints(足迹) on almost every part of the country, and he insisted on keeping a diary during his thirty - year traveling. He made great contribution to geography study.
