London Eye is a huge ferris wheel (摩天轮) which lies on the bank of the Thames (泰晤士河) in London, England. It was built in 1999 for celebrating the beginning of the twenty-first century, so it was called Millennium Wheel (千禧轮) by British at first. After that, its name changed for many times in the history. Its first official name was the British Airways London Eye and then the Merlin Entertainments London Eye. In 2011, it got another official name which was EDF — Energy London Eye. Since mid-January 2015, the name has been the Coca-Cola London Eye.
London Eye is 135 meters high, and the diameter (直径) of its wheel is 120 meters. It took the designers and builders nearly seven years to design and complete the building. People used a lot of materials to build London Eye. The big wheel was made of more than 1,700,000 kilograms of steel and the strong base was made of 3,000,000 kilograms of concrete (混凝土). Today, London Eye is still one of the largest ferris wheels in the world.
There are 32 glass capsules(密封舱) that were made in France on the wheel. Each capsule can hold 25 passengers. It takes the wheel about half an hour to finish a turn. As it goes around, the tourists can enjoy all the beautiful scenery in London.
London Eye has been so famous that millions of tourists visit it every year throughout the world.
