三、阅读理解。
What invention couldn't you live without?
A few years ago, a survey asked adults(成人) and teenagers to choose which of five things they “couldn't live without”. The choices were the microwave oven(微波炉), cell phone, personal computer, car, and toothbrush(牙刷). Believe it or not, the toothbrush got the first place. Nearly half the adults and one - third of the teenagers said they could not live without a toothbrush.
I guess when you think about ways people cleaned their teeth before toothbrushes were invented, you might not want to live without your toothbrush, either. Would you want to chew(咀嚼) on a stick or bird feather(羽毛)? How about cleaning your teeth with a stick and salt?
We can thank William Addis for the first mass - produced toothbrushes. Addis took a bone and made small holes in it. He tied some bristles(刷子毛) together and put them into the holes he had made in the bone. He began selling these around the year 1780 in England. Soon he became a rich man.
Over 150 years went by before American really picked up the brushing habit. In World War Ⅱ, soldiers had been taught to brush their teeth every day. They brought the habit home with them. That's good news for our teeth!
