Today, more and more people are choosing to buy electric cars. And many people think electric cars are the future. But others still want to use gas cars. Should all cars be electric? Different people have different ideas.

Many people agree with the idea. Gas cars burn fossil fuels (化石燃料) which can't be used as much as we want. We will certainly run out of them someday. When that happens, we will all have to drive electric cars because electricity can be produced by clean energy sources, such as wind. What's more, road travel produces about twenty percent of the world's carbon dioxide emissions (二氧化碳排放量). Gas cars also emit dangerous gas into the air. Driving electric cars, however, can help cut down on air pollution. Some electric cars are more expensive, but they need less maintenance (保养) than gas cars. And people only need to pay one US dollar for every 53 kilometers in an electric car. Finally, many electric cars are smaller and easier to park.
Other people hold the opposite opinion. Today, there are fewer charging (充电) stations than gas stations, which makes electric cars a lot less convenient for long trips. If we go all-electric, we would need to build more charging stations and power plants. Some power plants burn fossil fuels, which also pollutes the earth. In addition, the batteries (电池) of electric cars are made with rare metals (稀有金属). Finding these metals is bad for the environment. In cold weather, the chemical reactions in the batteries slow down. This shortens the distance (距离) an electric car can travel on one charge. Lastly, the price of a new electric car is about 11, 000 US dollars more than a new gas car.
