Though chopsticks are used in many Asian countries, they have their beginning in China. Chinese history says that the Chinese had chopsticks as far as the Xia Dynasty, about 4,000 years ago. In the Spring and Autumn Period, copper (铜) and steel chopsticks appeared. In the Han Dynasty, lacquered (上漆的) chopsticks came out, followed by gold and silver chopsticks. Today we have chopsticks made of wood, bamboo, plastics and even hard green stone.
Chopsticks tell Chinese tradition in their ways. In ancient times, some people used hard green stone or gold chopsticks to show they had much money. In history, many kings used silver chopsticks to take their food to see if it was poisonous (有毒的). It was said that if it was, the silver chopsticks would change their color. Chopsticks are traditionally given to a daughter when she gets married. To show that they should have a kid very soon, for "chopsticks" in Chinese is pronounced "kuaizi", which sounds like "get a kid soon". There was an old Chinese story about chopsticks. An old man showed his two sons how he could easily break a single chopstick but not a number of them to tell them to get along with and help each other. In China, chopsticks are connected with good luck. So on New Year's Eve, many families will lay out new chopsticks at dinners as a way of making wishes for luck.
Chopsticks have a great influence on the world. As we all know, in the southeast of Asia, chopsticks are a kind of common tool for everyday life. Many foreigners put their knives and forks away when they eat in China, just to enjoy using chopsticks.
