I have three teenagers who think they are already adults and know all the things. Clearly, this isn't true. And according to my 40-year experience, they still need some rules to help them to be better persons. I always keep reminding my teenagers of the followings.
First, we are a family. We are a team. We all live here, use the toilet paper and create rubbish. This means we all need other members to help us out. Many hands make work light and when you are using your hands only for your own things, this ship doesn't run smoothly(顺利地). Most teenagers don't pay much attention to things like folding their own clothes or taking out the rubbish, so I remind them often.
Second, you may have a conflict(冲突)with your teachers at school. This happens to almost all teachers and students. But it's impolite to show your disrespect(不尊重). You are one of many kids. Your teachers are here to help you discover who you want to be. This is their job and they work hard. You can't argue with your teachers while you are having classes. If you have a conflict with them, solve it after class in a proper way.
Third, if I ask you why you are late coming home, just tell me. If you are meeting something difficult, just tell me. If I'm doing something that's bothering(打扰)you, just tell me. We have an open door rule here. You don't want your mother to lie to you about things. That would make you feel unsafe and break our trust. Then, you'd stop coming to me and our relationship would be terrible, right?
Last, if I'm talking to you, I expect you to listen to me carefully. I want to share my life with you. I also enjoy sharing stories with you about things you did when you were young. Boring, I know, but necessary. I like to know more about you.
