第83页
At least 1,000 birds were killed in one day in early October, when they collided(碰撞) with a single Chicago building, McCormick Place Lakeside Center. Although not particularly tall by contemporary standards, the building’s almost unbroken glass surface presents a problem for birds, most notably at night when the brilliantly lit interiors cause them to become confused.
What makes this mass bird death unusual isn’t the number of birds that died, but that it drew so much public attention. That was thanks to the Chicago Bird Collision Monitors (CBCM), a volunteer group that has recorded bird strikes in the city since 2003. According to their records, this was the largest number of dead birds recorded on the grounds of one building over a single day.
One way to prevent bird collisions is to pay more attention to the design of glass buildings in cities. Chicago set an example for this when Jeanne Gang’s Aqua Tower was completed. Its wave - like surface and fritted glass(多孔玻璃) were in part designed to stop birds flying into the building’s windows.
The Aqua Tower demonstrates how architectural features usually chosen to enhance human lives can also benefit other organisms. This challenge was taken up by Buffalo - based architect Joyce Hwang in her project No Crash Zone. Hwang temporarily applied patterns to the windows of the Sullivan Center in Chicago. More easily applied design solutions include bird - friendly film applied to glass to help birds see windows as objects. This feature has been adopted by Columbia University in New York and several other buildings in the city.
The way humans make use of artificial light is a more tricky problem when it comes to caring for birds. A study showed that by shutting off half the lights in larger buildings at night, bird collisions can be greatly reduced. At the time of writing, a change in the law is being debated in New York to prohibit nighttime illumination(照明) of unoccupied buildings. Many libraries and public schools already turn off their lights during the bird migration season.
8. What do we know about the building of McCormick Place Lakeside Center?
A. It’s covered with glass.
B. It’s appealing to birds.
C. It’s decorated with lights.
D. It’s extremely tall by contemporary standards.
9. What does the CBCM aim to do?
A. Collect information on bird collisions globally.
B. Raise public awareness of bird protection.
C. Report bird deaths for various reasons.
D. Record bird strikes in Chicago.
10. How can bird - friendly film applied to glass prevent bird collisions?
A. The film is soft enough for birds.
B. The film makes glass visible for birds.
C. The film has patterns to keep birds away.
D. The film allows birds to go through glass.
11. What does the law under debate in New York focus on?
A. The development of artificial light.
B. The protection of migrating birds.
C. The empty buildings’ illumination at night.
D. The construction of buildings with glass.
答案: 8.A 细节理解题。根据第一段中的“the building’s almost unbroken glass surface”可知,这座建筑物表面覆盖着玻璃。
9.D 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“That was thanks to the Chicago Bird Collision Monitors (CBCM), a volunteer group that has recorded bird strikes in the city since 2003.”可知,芝加哥鸟类碰撞监测组织是自2003年以来一直记录该市鸟类撞击事件的志愿者组织。故D项符合题意。
10.B 推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中的“More easily applied design solutions include bird - friendly film applied to glass to help birds see windows as objects.”可知,这种薄膜贴在玻璃上可以帮助鸟类将窗户视为物体。由此可推知,这种薄膜能够让玻璃对鸟类来说是可见的,这样鸟就不会撞上玻璃了。
11.C 细节理解题。根据最后一段中的“At the time of writing, a change in the law is being debated in New York to prohibit nighttime illumination of unoccupied buildings.”可知,纽约正在讨论修改法律,禁止无人的建筑物在夜间照明。因此,在讨论中的这条法规关注的是空建筑物夜间照明的问题。
