《2025年一本英语五合一必刷题高中人教版》

第20页
My name is Curiosity. I started my adventures on Mars in a place called Gale Crater. It stretches 154 kilometers wide. I was told to land here because scientists thought Gale Crater used to hold a lake filled with water. Other spacecraft had taken pictures showing features that looked like dried - up lakes on Earth.
After I got here, I analyzed some rocks with my on - board instruments. And I found minerals that had water locked up in their structure. With the data I collected, scientists back on Earth might be able to confirm that Gale Crater was a lake.
One of the tools I brought to Mars was a laser (激光器). I used it to study the composition of rocks and found manganese oxide (氧化锰). Manganese oxide forms where there’s a lot of oxygen. This discovery told scientists that at some point in Mars’s past, there was a lot of oxygen in the atmosphere.
A few inches below Mars’s surface, I found some pieces of organic molecules(分子). Your body and all other living things contain organic molecules, so the finding is pretty exciting. But that doesn’t mean I found ancient life. It’s sort of like entering your kitchen and finding eggs, flour and chocolate. A chocolate cookie can be made using them, but you don’t actually find a cookie.
I keep sensing a gas called methane in Mars’s atmosphere. Methane can come from living things. But methane can form in other ways, too. And they don’t all involve life.
My mission isn’t over yet. I plan to keep exploring. We don’t know if life ever took hold on Mars, but it’s amazing to know that Mars once had that chance.
