Morpho butterflies(蓝闪蝶) are some of the most beautiful butterflies in the world, thanks to their shining blue wings. Recently, inspired by their special wings, researchers from Shenzhen University in China have developed a type of colored film, a material that can help keep the objects it’s attached to cooler. This new invention could revolutionize plenty of industries.
The problem of color and the absorption of heat has been bothering scientists for centuries. Color is an expression of light waves that are reflected back to the eye instead of being absorbed. The absorption of the light waves creates heat. White reflects all light waves back into the atmosphere, while colors only reflect some light waves back into the atmosphere. This is why white clothing is cooler than colored clothing. And this somewhat complex issue affects a surprising number of real - world issues. For example, running the air conditioner in electric cars can reduce the driving range by more than half.
To create a material that can circumvent these issues, Dr Wanlin Wang from Shenzhen University and his team looked to nature for inspiration. Specifically, they looked at the Morpho butterflies. According to New Scientist, the wings of the Morpho butterflies are made of nanoparticles(纳米粒子) that bend and bounce light waves to create color rather than absorbing them. This allows them to keep cool.
Wang and his team aren’t the first team to create materials allowing for passive cooling, but they’re the first to do so in color. All other materials have been white or clear, while the Shenzhen University team’s film comes in bright blue, yellow and red. Now the new material has tested well.
The hope is that eventually this type of film will be used to cover electric cars, keeping them cool, but in truth the possibilities are endless: colorful glass windows that keep buildings cool, self - cooling camping tents, cool - looking computers that don’t overheat, and so on. All of these may one day be a reality thanks to the beautiful Morpho butterflies.
8. Which aspect of the Morpho butterflies inspired the researchers to invent the colored film?
A. The way they fly.
B. The habitat they live in.
C. The temperature of their body.
D. The composition of their wings.
9. What does the underlined word “circumvent” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Stress.
B. Confuse.
C. Raise.
D. Avoid.
10. What can be inferred about the Shenzhen University team’s film from the last paragraph?
A. It’s far from satisfying at present.
B. It will probably be applied to various fields.
C. It has been used in electric cars.
D. It will be available for people soon.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. A new type of cooling film.
B. A unique kind of butterfly.
C. A creative way of creating clothing.
D. A special color of reflecting light waves.
根据第一段中的“inspired by their special wings, researchers from Shenzhen University in China have developed a type of colored film”和第三段中的“Specifically, they looked at the Morpho butterflies...This allows them to keep cool.”
根据第二段中的“And this somewhat complex issue affects a surprising number of real - world issues... more than half.”
根据最后一段中的“The hope is that eventually this type of film will be used to cover electric cars, keeping them cool, but in truth the possibilities are endless:colorful glass windows that keep buildings cool, self - cooling camping tents, cool - looking computers that don’t overheat, and so on.”
