On Nov. 15, the World Health Organization (WHO) advised “immediate skin - to - skin care for survival of preterm(早产的) babies”. That’s what kangaroo care is. A good way to help a preterm baby survive is simply to hold it close to a parent’s naked chest. That is how kangaroo moms hold their babies in their pouch.
In 1978, two physician researchers introduced the technique at the San Juan de Dios Hospital in Colombia. They were hoping to find a way to reduce the country’s high death rate for preterm babies—about 70% at the time. Formerly, these babies were placed in incubators (恒温箱)—when they were available—to control the babies’ temperatures and provide enough oxygen. But resource - poor countries like Colombia have few incubators.
Kangaroo care works, researchers believe, because the babies pick up heartbeat and breathing rhythms from the parents’ bodies, helping to stabilize their own heartbeat and breathing. The body warmth of a parent also helps control the baby’s temperature.
The researchers published their results in 1983. They presented their results that year at a UNICEF(联合国儿童基金会) conference: The babies in kangaroo care sleep more, and cry less, than those in incubators. UNICEF, recognizing the potential of kangaroo care, began distributing information on the technique worldwide. Since then, the practice has slowly spread around the world. Fathers are being involved as well. According to a study by the WHO, starting kangaroo care immediately after birth has the potential to save up to 150, 000 baby lives each year.
The latest country to encourage this practice is Ivory Coast. With the help of UNICEF, the University Hospital Medical Center in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, opened its first kangaroo care ward (病房). In the ward, the mother is available to the baby around the clock. This care unit is under the guidance of Dr Chantière. It’s a pilot program to educate parents in a technique not widely known in the country.
“The fathers see the importance of the closeness of the babies to the mother’s body,” says UNICEF representative Mark Vincent. “They realize they can do it as well.”

答案:
根据第一段中的“That’s what kangaroo care is. A good way to help a preterm baby survive is simply to hold it close to a parent’s naked chest. That is how kangaroo moms hold their babies in their pouch.”
根据第二段中的“They were hoping to find a way to reduce the country’s high death rate for preterm babies”和“But resource - poor countries like Colombia have few incubators.”
根据第四段中的“UNICEF, recognizing the potential of kangaroo care, began distributing information on the technique worldwide. Since then, the practice has slowly spread around the world.”
