It’s snowing in southern Maine. Just ask Arlene Cole. The 92 - year - old woman takes it one day at a time—recording the daily weather conditions, that is. She’s likely the only person in Maine who has been doing it as long as she has.
Cole has participated in the National Weather Service’s Cooperative Observer Program for 58 years for Maine. Every day at 5 pm, she records the temperature and measures precipitation(降水量) levels. She then sends her data to the office of the National Weather Service (NWS) at the end of the month.
A weather station was installed on her property in 1965 after a neighboring resident who provided the same data had died following years of service. Cole had an interest in the weather already with her 5 - year diary she had started with her own equipment at the time.
“Look, it’s snowing here. This is interesting. The weather is interesting in Maine,” she said. To measure the snow, Cole has a 60 - inch stick like a giant ruler outside her kitchen window. She said, “At 5 pm tonight, I’m going out to see how much snow I’ve got since last 5 pm.” The temperature readings come in from the outside into her kitchen. “I can read that from the inside. I don’t have to go out to do that,” she said.
About 11,000 volunteers, like Cole, are spread out across the US every 25 miles. The NWS provides and maintains the equipment as well as the reporting software. After the NWS quality controls the data, it’s filed and stored as official climate records.
If you live in Maine and want to know how the average temperature has changed since the 1960s, guess what data is the NWS using to answer that question? Cole’s decades of observations. “The fact that we can answer questions like that is a proof of the work these observers do, and it really helps track how the climate is changing,” said Donald Dumont, an NWS warning coordination meteorologist.
4. What can we learn about Cole from the first two paragraphs?
A. She has started a program about the weather in Maine.
B. She keeps track of the weather in Maine.
C. She goes to the NWS office monthly.
D. She is able to predict the weather.
5. What made Cole start keeping a 5 - year diary about the weather in Maine?
A. Her interest in the weather.
B. Her job in a weather station.
C. A strong sense of responsibility.
D. A weather observer’s influence.
6. What does Cole use the 60 - inch stick to do?
A. Support the kitchen window.
B. Send data to the NWS office.
C. Measure precipitation on snowy days.
D. Help with cooking.
7. What does Donald Dumont say about observers like Cole?

C. They are knowledgeable.
D. They are generous.

答案:
4.B 细节理解题。根据第一段中的“The 92 - year - old woman takes it one day at a time—recording the daily weather conditions...in Maine who has been doing it”可知,Cole每天记录缅因州的天气状况。故B项符合题意。
5.A 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Cole had an interest in the weather already with her 5 - year diary she had started with her own equipment at the time.”可知,Cole因为对天气感兴趣,她用自己的设备记了五年的天气日记。由此可知,她对天气的兴趣使她开始写记录缅因州天气的日记,长达五年。
6.C 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“Every day at 5 pm,she records the temperature and measures precipitation levels.”和第四段中的“To measure the snow,Cole has a 60 - inch stick like a giant ruler outside her kitchen window. She said,‘At 5 pm...how much snow I’ve got since last 5 pm.’”
