B
After several years of studying in foreign countries, I have learnt one old saying: “You will miss your family most when it is festival.” Luckily for me, however, it is not hard to find Chinese restaurants in Chinatowns in every big city.
I still remember my first Spring Festival in London. My friends and I really wanted to enjoy a traditional Chinese meal, so we decided to cook for ourselves. When students from other countries heard about this, they were very curious about traditional Chinese meals so we invited them over. That night we made dumplings and other dishes and had a good time with friends from Australia, India, Brazil and Mexico.
My last Lantern Festival in New York was also a sweet experience. I was on a business trip then and my parents sent me a message asking me whether I had tangyuan, which is made of sticky rice flour filled with sweet fillings. I had no idea where to eat tangyuan. After making several phone calls to consult other friends, I finally went to a restaurant where I received a warm welcome and had fantastic food. I was served some tangyuan as a dessert and it really made me happy.
It is always comforting for us to be in touch with home, especially after so many years studying or working abroad. The world has become a smaller place as international travelling becomes easier and faster. Because of the rapid development of technology, which frees more people from office jobs, many people choose to work and live abroad. It can be overwhelming when so many visitors cram into one given place. However, I believe it is a good thing from a broader view. People from different countries will understand each other better and then have less prejudices.
Nowadays, people from all over the world can easily find a connection with home when they are in other countries. You will find whatever you want, like spices for your favourite dish or traditional clothes of your country. The cities have become cosmopolitan without losing their character.
Celebrating festivals is another way to make the world smaller. After celebrating traditional Chinese festivals in different countries, I realise the festival is a chance for people to share happiness and at the same time, to build closer relationships with others.
