When I was growing up, my family didn’t have much money. Life was simpler 40 years ago, but in some ways it was better. At Christmas, my brother and I each received one gift, and it was often home-made. We had a good meal, but we weren’t given sweets or other snacks. I had to help Mum with the cooking from early in the morning. I made my own Christmas cards and wrote “thank-you” cards for my family. Sometimes our grandmother, who was very old, would stay with us, and my brother spent all day bringing her food and drinks. We enjoyed playing games and singing traditional songs. We would often visit other families in the village and take them gifts. Christmas meant a lot of work, but we didn’t mind because we loved being together and having fun.
Christmas is completely different nowadays. A lot of traditions have disappeared. In my opinion, the holiday is too focused on shopping and spending money rather than spending time with family. People often feel stressed because they have to spend so much money and buy so many gifts. I also think that they spend a bit too much time sitting around staring at TV and computer screens, instead of talking, playing games and laughing all day.
Christmas should be about the people we love and not about money or how many gifts we receive. This year, my family is going to have an old-fashioned holiday with fewer gifts and more traditional food. I’m not sure my children will like the idea, but I think they will enjoy it more once they try it!
