6a. 阅读短文,选择短文出处。
Every year, the world’s population grows and there are more mouths to feed. In the meantime, there is less and less land available due to various reasons. These changes all mean that food prices are rising, and people are exploring cheaper alternatives. In the future, the foods we put on our plates may differ a lot from those we eat now.
With land and fresh water in increasingly short supply, we might start farming plants in the sea. We will probably grow algae. They are sea plants, some found as tiny green floating spots or as long pieces, such as seaweed. Growing them should be easy, as they just need sunlight and seawater. There is no need to provide extra energy for them, and they are considered one of the healthiest foods. While people from some Asian countries already eat this slightly salty food, it’s likely to become a major part of our diets all over the world.
If you don’t fancy that, how about a steak that didn’t come from a cow? Scientists can now make meat in a laboratory. Tiny muscle cells are taken from a cow and placed in a mixture of water and nutrients. They grow into larger pieces of meat, which can be eaten. The meat is environmentally friendly and no animals suffer, though it is still more expensive than natural meat and has very little flavour.
Food could also become much more convenient – by turning it into a drink. Several companies have made food replacement drinks for people who are too busy to cook. The drinks contain everything we need for a healthy diet, all in a small bottle. The drinks look like milk but they contain no animal products. Many flavours are available, including chocolate and strawberry. While this is not a very enjoyable way to “eat”, it could save a lot of time and money.
