6 a
Gym Membership by Country

Exercise in China used to mean team sports and traditional martial arts like tai chi. While these types of exercise are still popular, gym membership is growing by 12% a year. This high growth is driven by rising incomes and the use of social media. People know their friends getting fit in a gym and want to join them, too. The employment market is also changing, with fitness trainers in demand.
It’s mostly people in their twenties and thirties who join gyms. Liu Chao, 28, who is a lawyer, joined a gym in Tianjin five years ago. “I get pretty stressed at work and taking an exercise class helps me with that,” he says. “Also, work involves sitting all day long, so I need some kinds of exercise.” He says that he met his wife at the gym, when they had a class together. “We often go to the gym together and meet friends there. It’s really good for our social life.”
With the continuous improvement of people’s living standards, sport is becoming more and more popular in China, with around 30% of the population exercising regularly. Now, gyms are encouraging even more people to get into shape.
