Cinemas may completely disappear in the West. Every year, fewer people are going to the cinema. In the past few years, only about 165 million tickets have been sold in the UK each year. It’s almost the same story in the US, Canada and Australia.
There are many reasons why people have stopped going to the cinema. High prices are one reason. A ticket can cost around £16 in London. But it’s not only the prices of tickets: the prices of snacks in cinemas are often double those in a normal shop. Many people can’t afford to go to the cinema.
Instead of a night out, some fans are choosing to watch films at home. With the rise of TV and film streaming services at home, there are a lot more choices than at the cinema. The UK’s top streaming service offers over 5,000 films and TV shows to its customers, for the cheap price of about £9 a month. A typical cinema, by comparison, might only show 4 films at a time.
It used to be that only cinemas could offer a high-quality film experience on a big screen, but that’s changed. Most people now have a large HDTV in the US. Many even have “surround sound” in their living rooms, where sounds are played all around you. And of course, at home you can sit in a comfortable seat and eat your own cheap snacks.
In addition, by watching a film at home, you can really concentrate on it. When I last went to the cinema, the couple behind me talked the whole time. A man in front of me kept turning his phone on, and it was very bright. At home, these problems don’t exist.
It’s easy to see why fewer people are going to the cinema. It will be sad to lose cinemas, but the home experience is so much better.
