A food stylist creates dishes which look delicious in photos. Most of the food that you see in ads, cookery books and magazines was prepared by food stylists.
Kathy Hurd became a food stylist by accident. “Originally, I didn’t even know the job existed,” she says. “I wrote a cookery book and needed to take some photos for it. While the food in the photos tasted lovely, it looked ¹horrible! ”
Kathy quickly learnt how to make food look more attractive. “I sometimes do some strange things!” she admits. “It might ²surprise some people to learn that meat is often not cooked inside and coloured brown. Some foods like ³butter go soft under the hot light, so I use models. You don’t want to eat most of the food!”

Kathy ⁸encourages other food stylists to train as a cook first in the future, and then become an assistant food stylist. “I think the best way to learn is to start as an assistant. Although it means cooking, cleaning and washing up for six months, I’m afraid you have to ⁹suffer a little for your dreams! It’s worth it though. This really is a ¹⁰super job if you like food.”
