Huang Xuhua, the chief designer of China's first - generation nuclear submarine(核潜艇), passed away on February 6, 2025.
Born in Guangdong in 1926, he studied shipbuilding at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and joined the Communist Party of China in 1949. In 1958, he was chosen to lead a team to design China's first nuclear - powered submarine.
At that time, China had no experience in this technology. The team had few materials and no foreign help. They searched newspapers and magazines for information, but it was hard to tell if the details were true. After studying two US submarine models and working tirelessly, they created five possible plans. Without computers or calculators, they used abacuses(算盘) and rulers. To ensure accuracy, three groups checked calculations separately. Even when the project paused from 1962 to 1965 due to economic problems, they never lost hope and continued researching.
Finally, in 1970, China successfully built its first nuclear - powered submarine, becoming the fifth country to achieve this. Huang's name was kept secret until 1987 because his work was highly important for national security. In 2019, he received the Medal of the Republic, China's highest honor, for his outstanding contributions.
Huang's story teaches us that with hard work, teamwork, and a strong will, even the toughest challenges can be overcome.
