2025 is the Year of the Snake. In Chinese culture, it's also named the Year of the Small Dragon. This is because snakes and dragons are quite similar. The dragon looks like a huge snake, so many people think the dragon's shape comes from the snake.
The Year of the Snake has special meaning in Chinese culture. In Chinese myths(神话), snakes are linked to wisdom(智慧), cleverness(聪明) and mystery(神秘). People born in the Year of the Snake are thought to be charming(迷人的), understanding, and full of knowledge.
Snakes are in many old Chinese stories. In mythology(神话), Fu Xi and his sister Nü Wa, who were ancestors(祖先) of the Chinese, had snake-like bodies and human heads. The Classic of Mountains and Seas(《山海经》) tells stories about gods. Many of these gods are related to snakes. For example, the four sea gods wear snakes as earrings and even ride on snakes.
Snakes also show up in folk stories. One well-known story is “The Legend of the White Snake”. In it, a magical snake named Bai Suzhen falls in love with Xu Xian and they get married. Bai Suzhen is shown as a kind and beautiful character.
