Do you know a festival for fire? The Yi people celebrate the Torch Festival every year. It’s usually from the 24th day to the 26th day of the sixth lunar month. The Yi people light torches to show they respect the fire. ①
The early Yi people lived in high and cold places in the mountains. They used fire for light, to stay warm, and to cook food. During the festival, each family has a big torch. But the children’s torches are much smaller. The Yi children are very eager for this festival, because it means they can have good food and have a good time staying with their family. They even go out in different groups to pick flowers and bamboo branches to make their torches beautiful. ④
