Wu Xiong, a headmaster of a school, has spent about 20 years turning a small mountain school into a lively sports and education center.
In 2004, he became the headmaster of Tangfang Primary School in Guizhou. At that time, the school was old and small with only 3 teachers and 75 students. Many children didn’t like going to school. To solve this problem, Wu came up with an idea—sports.
In 2006, the school held its first sports meeting. Teachers and students carried a cement slab (水泥板) from 1.5 kilometers away. They used wooden boards as a net for table tennis. Later, they added badminton and other sports. Students loved these activities.
In 2009, it became a boarding school (寄宿学校). Wu felt that sports were even more important to students. Now the school is over 10 times bigger than before. There are 4 P.E. teachers. Students do sports for at least 2.5 hours every day. Among the 469 students, only 6 wear glasses. Through sports competitions, they have learned how to face both winning and losing. The school’s average scores(平均分) rose from below 30 points in 2004 to over 80 in 2023. More than 100 graduates have gone to middle schools that focus on sports. Wu says the school must balance sports and study. Students must finish homework first, but doing sports they enjoy helps everyone.
